The thirty first Raising Day of 12 Corps of the Indian Army - also known as Konark Corps - was celebrated at the Corps headquarters in Jodhpur on Monday.

The corps - which came into existence on the auspicious day of Mahashivratri on February 26,1987 - is charged with protection of the desert sectors of the country fallingin Rajasthan and Gujarat states. The Corps was raised under Lieutenant General A K Chatterjee in February 1987.

To commemorate the occasion, Lieutenant General R K Jagga, General Officer Commanding Konark Corps, laid a wreath at the Konark War Memorial, Jodhpur Military Station in revered remembrance of the martyrs who laid down their lives in various battles fought in this sector while ensuring the safety and security of nation. Also referred to as Desert Corps within the army, the corps adopted “Konark” as its formation insignia after the Konark Sun Temple of Puri as a symbolic representation of the Radiation of Sun in eight cardinal directions, thereby establishing a spiritual link with the Sun City - Jodhpur.

The Corps comprises of two combat divisions, and is one of the two Corps under the Pune based Southern Command. It currently consists of 4th Armoured Brigade, 34th Infantry Brigade, 11th Infantry Division and 12th Infantry Division. Jodhpur was chosen for Corps Headquarters due to its geographical importance and being a communication hub.

Besides shouldering the operational responsibility, the Konark Corps has also provided help to the civilians and administrative authorities alike in times of natural calamities.
