Déjà vu moment: The accidental mayor becomes MLA

In the past year, the Jaipur Municipal Corporation (JMC) got a new identity. The state capital Jaipur displayed a spectacular performance in the Swachh Sarvekshan (survey)-2018. In the survey, the city has achieved a lot of leap in the 39th position in 4047 cities across the country. In the category of the state capital, Jaipur was chosen the number one. In the clean survey, Jaipur made a jump of 176 position, due to which it became a new identity in the country.

In the year 2018, the city witnessed a new history as the city got the third mayor for the first time in a single tenure of five years.

JMC and then-Mayor Ashok Lahoti made significant efforts to make city number one in cleanliness. The use of polythene bags in the city was restricted, which brought some improvements to the city’s cleaning system. Similarly, the inevitability of keeping two dustbins out of the shop and institutions was implemented. This reduced the garbage on the city streets. Apart from this, cleanliness awards and other innovations have also been done and as a result, Jaipur has made it to the top 100. In 2015, the clean survey of 475 cities of the country was conducted and Jaipur stood at 370. After this, in 2016, 73 cities of the country were surveyed and Jaipur got 29th rank. In the year 2017, the survey was conducted among 434 cities across the country and city ranked 215. By the end of the year, city mayor Ashok Lahoti resigned from his post and deputy mayor Manoj Bhardwaj is now the acting mayor.

On the other hand, BJP had appointed Rajya Sabha MP Madan Lal Saini as state president of Rajasthan unit four months before the Assembly elections. In the by-elections of Ajmer and Alwar Lok Sabha seat and Mandalgarh Assembly constituency, the BJP was defeated. The resignation of the then BJP state president Ashok Parnami was taken after the defeat in by-election. The party then declared Saini as the new head of state after 74 days.
