Emotions got better of CM Vasundhara Raje as she recalled her days while working as ministerial colleague of late Atal Bihari Vajpayee and narrated how Vajpayee asked her to look after the families of passengers and crew during the time of plane hijack in 1999.
Speaking during the sarv dharm prayer meeting to pay tribute to Vajpayee, Raje said that during the time of plane hijack she was in Chennai.
“I was asked by him to be back immediately and stay with the families of passenger and pilot,” Raje said with lump in her throat. She also narrated an incident when her mother Rajmata Vijaya Raje Scindia was not well and Vajpayee had come to see her and ailing Rajmata suddenly got enough strength after she was informed that Vajpayee had come to see her.
“Rajmata said that I had been waiting for this time when you become the prime minister,” chief minister said remembering Vajpayee.
She shared how Vajpayee gave her tips when she was about to enter political field and the way Vajpayee and leaders of that era used to stay at the homes of party workers even after coming at late night hours.
“We don’t have to knock the door, they welcome us and give us the best of rooms and other things,” Vajpayee said to her when one day she asked how they felt to knock the door of party workers at 12 am. Governor Kalyan Singh who had been the chief minister of UP when Vajpayee was prime minister remembered the time when he worked with him and called him a statesman. He said that one who thinks of election is a politician, but the one who thinks of next generation is a statesman.
PCC chief Sachin Pilot gave credit Vajpayee for making the country a nuclear power and said that his behaviour and conduct as a politician was an inspiration to everybody and narrated an anecdote when Vajpayee represented India at the UN and gave speech in Hindi.
