The BJP Government in Rajasthan is all set to cash in on its connection with renowned mathematician and astronomer Brahmagupta and Mahakavi Magh. A panorama depicting the lives of the two will be built at Bhinmal in Jalore district by Rajasthan government. Both Brahmagupta and Mahakavi Magh hail from Bhinmal, erstwhile Bhillamala state.

Statues of the two were unveiled by chief minister Vasundhara Raje during Rajasthan Gaurav Yatra. Work would soon begin under the auspices of Rajasthan Heritage Conservation and Development Authority. They will soon be established into a panorama that would depict the life and workings of  the two. An amount of almost Rs 2 crore has been sanctioned for this.

Brahmagupta is among the most renowned mathematicians of ancient India. He was born in 598 AD in Bhillamala, the modern day Bhinmal. He has the distinction of dividing maths into two parts - arithmetic and algebra. In his book Brahmasphutasiddhanta, he gives arithmetic rules that apply to zero and negative numbers. His gave the method of calculating position of heavenly bodies and calculation of lunar and solar eclipse. Brahmagupta was invited by the king of Ujjain and went on to be the head of the Ujjain Observatory. Mahakavi Magh’s grandfather Suprabhudev was the prime minister in the court of King Varmlat of Bhinmal. He wrote the epic mahakavya Shishupal Vadh. Magh was invited by Raja Bhoj to his court.

“The government is committed to restoring the memory of all revered persons from the state. There have been many who have not got their justified space in History and our effort is to correct that,” said Onkar Singh Lakhawat, chairman Rajasthan Heritage Conservation and Development Authority.

“People of the area identify with both Brahmagupta and Mahakavi Magh. Folklore associated with them is much prevalent. A panorama depicting their lives is a welcome step,” said Devji Patel MP Jalore.

BJP is establishing around 50 panoramas of local deities, famous warriors and renowned persons to establish a connect among their followers. It is a concerted effort by the party to cater to the people who identify with them and worship them. It is also an effort to gain political mileage among them.
