Congress has geared up for its first legislative meeting that could take place on Wednesday. Meanwhile, a day before the counting of votes, the conference hall at the PCC headquarters was all decked up. The stain-ridden walls of the hall were cleaned up and painted afresh. “The legislative meeting will be held in the hall and hence it has been cleaned up to welcome new MLAs. The meeting is likely to take place on Wednesday,” said Mahesh Sharma, PCC organisation secretary incharge.

According to sources, the party state leadership has decided to instruct its MLAs to rush to Jaipur on Tuesday evening after collecting certificates of their election from the respective constituencies from the returning officers. The observers (names not finalised yet) will be sent by the party high command to meet the new MLAs and register their ‘votes’ to elect their leader who would be the chief minister. The observers would send a report on their votes to the party president Rahul Gandhi who will call the shot in the nomination of the CM.

Congress is hoping to return to power as indicated in the exit polls. The party sources claimed that as the counting takes place the party’s focus is to keep an eye on the magic number rather that who would be the CM. “The party is focused to score magic number rather than debating who would be the CM. If by chance the party misses the magic number and there is a hung Assembly then what would be the party’s strategy to arrange the required numbers will be our priority. Hence senior leaders would be keep tab of Independents and the third front leaders till the counting ends. I am very sure that party would form the government with a majority,” said a senior party functionary.

Meanwhile PCC chief Sachin Pilot, who was camping in New Delhi for last two days, returned to Jaipur on Monday evening. He could not meet the Gandhi scion as he was in Chandigarh to attend a launching programme of a magazine. Pilot, however, on Saturday called on UPA president Sonia Gandhi and briefed her about the possibilities of government formation. Similarly, AICC general secretary Ashok Gehlot was in Delhi till Monday evening and was expected to return to Jaipur by night.
