Don’t want to betray my voters: Navin Pilania
Pilania had contested from same seat as BJP candidate in 2003 and 2008
Why have you joined BSP?
A third option - apart from two main parties - needs to be nurtured in Rajasthan to benefit the people. I could have fielded candidates on NPP banner, but with so little time, no organisational structure, no cadre it would have been a wasted exercise. The best option before me was to join BSP, a national party of the backwards and farmers. I have been associated with their cause so it was a natural choice.
What is the strategy?
I hope to bring about a SC, ST and OBC combine. I met Mayawati Ji and she was very receptive to my opinion and suggestions. I have made suggestions regarding fielding BSP candidate for Jaipur Rural seat in Lok sabha elections.
You are originally from BJP, why did you not go back?
I could have gone when NPP MLAs joined BJP, but that would be cheating with my voters. They selected me as an entity separate from BJP and Congress. I prefer to stay back and struggle for my people and not toe party line.
Did Congress ask you to join?
You can see what is happening in the Congress and I did not want to be a part of the struggle in that space.
What is your take on the third front? You are a Jat, did Hanuman Beniwal’s party not appeal to you?
Small regional parties damage the concept of an alternate power centre. They will not throw up MLAs but only become vote cutters. I feel all small parties should join forces - form consensus and - contest the seats in a consolidated way.
How do you evaluate your chances?
Last elections were fought with BJP riding a Modi tsunami. That was their best performance, when I managed to win then, I will do so again.
