It was a proud moment on October 31, 2020 when Praveen Dubey, the 27-year-old legspinner was handed his Indian Premier League debut for Delhi Capitals in their crucial game against Mumbai Indians at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. It ended a near your-year wait for Praveen Dubey to feature in the Indian Premier League. His legspinning abilities have been making the rounds in the Indian domestic circuit. Dubey is the third legspinner in the Delhi Capitals camp after Amit Mishra and Sandeep Lamichhane. In this must-win encounter for Delhi Capitals, Dubey will be aiming to show his mettle and out Mumbai Indians in a tizzy on a slow and low deck in Dubai.

Born in Azamgarh, Dubey decided to play domestic cricket for Karnataka and he started playing for them in the 2015/16 season. Overall, he has played only one first-class game and that was against Saurashtra in January 2020 but he has played 11 List A games and 14 Twenty20 games. In T20s, he has taken 16 wickets at an average of 19 and a good economy rate of 6.87. It was his skills which landed him a contract with Royal Challengers Bangalore where he was picked for Rs 35 lakhs. However, in the 2016 and 2017 season, he sadly he did not play a single game.

Injury and a selection

In the IPL 2020 auction, Praveen Dubey was not picked by any team and he went unsold for his base price of Rs 20 lakhs. However, an injury to Amit Mishra during the course of the IPL forced the Delhi Capitals management to call upon Praveen Dubey. After warming the bench for over 10 games, his four-year wait for an IPL debut ended on Saturday with a game against Mumbai Indians.

The ongoing clash between Delhi Capitals and Mumbai Indians is important for Shreyas Iyer’s team as they have lost three consecutive games. A win for Delhi Capitals will seal their spot in the playoffs while a loss could make their last league game against Royal Challengers Bangalore a potential shootout for the final spot, unless Virat Kohli’s team beats Sunrisers Hyderabad in the other game which will take place in the evening.
