September 19 is an auspicious day for many cricket fans in 2020 as this is the date that IPL 2020 will finally begin after six months of delay due to the coronavirus pandemic. Rohit Sharma’s Mumbai Indians will take on MS Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings in a blockbuster opening clash at the Sheikh Abu Zayed stadium in Abu Dhabi. However, September 19 is a memorable date for many cricket fans. 13 years ago, on this date, during the 2007 World T20 clash between England and India in Durban, Yuvraj Singh unleashed his fury and created history.

India were boosted by a fast start from Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag as they smashed aggressive fifties. However, when Yuvraj Singh came out to bat, England were staging a mini-comeback. Andrew Flintoff took the occasion to sledge Yuvraj Singh and things became pretty nasty, with both players going after each other. It was at that moment when Yuvraj Singh decided to unleash his fury. The target was Stuart Broad and he proceeded to create history.

The 19th over saw unprecedented carnage. Broad’s fist ball was dispatched out of the ground over deep midwicket by Yuvraj. The second ball was full and Yuvraj flicked it into the stands at deep backward square leg. The third ball was angled full and Yuvraj made room to hammer it inside out over deep extra cover. Broad switched to round the wicket but bowled a full toss outside off which was creamed over deep point by Yuvraj for his fourth consecutive six. There was a buzz around Kingsmead as Yuvraj clobbered a full ball on leg stump over deep midwicket. History was finally created when he smashed a length ball over wide long on to become the first batsman in T20I history to hit six sixes in one over.

Yuvraj reached his fifty off 12 balls and it remains the fastest in history. Yuvraj became the fourth player after Sir Garfield Sobers, Ravi Shastri and Herschelle Gibbs to hit six sixes in one over.

What was said

Years later, Yuvraj revealed what Flintoff had said that spurred him on. “To be honest it was not on my mind to hit 5 sixes. But my argument with Flintoff got me infuriated. I had hit Flintoff for 2 boundaries on good deliveries and he did not like it. And after that over when I was walking to the other end. I can’t repeat exactly what he said. He told me that those were some ridiculous shots. So I asked him what did he say and had a confrontation. Flintoff said he will cut my throat off. I responded by stating,  ‘You see this bat in my hand. You know where I am gonna hit you with this bat?’”

Broad emerged stronger and became one of the best England bowlers along with James Anderson. Broad became only the fourth pace bowler to take 500 wickets in Tests and Yuvraj praised him on his official Twitter handle, “I’m sure every time I write something about @StuartBroad8, people relate to him getting hit for 6 sixes! Today I request all my fans to applaud what he has achieved! 500 test wickets is no joke - it takes hard work, dedication & determination. Broady you’re a legend! Hats off,” Yuvraj said.
