MS Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings are having a torrid time in IPL 2020 as they suffered their eighth loss in 11 games. The three-time IPL champions suffered a 10-wicket thrashing at the hands of the Mumbai Indians, which was the first time that the Chennai Super Kings had ever lost by that margin. The win has all but ended their chances mathematically of qualifying for the playoffs although there is a miraculous chance that they can still get through to the backdoor with some spectacular implosions by the likes of Kolkata Knight Riders, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Kings XI Punjab and Rajasthan Royals.

However, following the end of the game between Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings, MS Dhoni gave away his number seven jersey to the Pandya brothers - Hardik and Krunal. Both players were delighted to have gotten the jerseys. This was the second consecutive time that MS Dhoni had given away his jersey in the IPL 2020, with his 200th match jersey being presented to Jos Buttler after the game against Rajasthan Royals.

The move to give away jerseys has caused some buzz on social media with some fans stating that MS Dhoni might retire from the IPL even. There is talk of a major overhaul in the Chennai Super Kings team for IPL 2021 after a dismal show in the tournament and there is a possibility that MS Dhoni might not feature in the tournament.

MS Dhoni retires

On August 15, 2020, at 7:29 PM, MS Dhoni stunned the entire world by announcing his retirement from international cricket on Instagram. The announcement was simple and it was followed by a video montage of some of his best moments with the song ‘Main pal do pal ka shayar hoon’ from the 1976 film Kabhie Kabhie starring Amitabh Bachchan and Rakhee.

At that same moment, Suresh Raina also announced his retirement from international cricket but it was overshadowed by Dhoni’s spectacular yet simple announcement.

With the way how MS Dhoni has retired from all forms of cricket, be it his sudden announcement of Test retirement in 2014 in Australia to his statement on Instagram on August 15, 2020, one can never be too sure about how MS Dhoni will announce his IPL retirement. If he does retire from the IPL after the end of 2020, it will be a sad way for one of the greatest cricketers and captains to bow out of the game of cricket.

Chennai Super Kings will take on Royal Challengers Bangalore in their next encounter and a loss will eliminate them even mathematically from the playoff race. Looking at the confidence of the side, that seems to be the likely result on Sunday.
