Super Sunday in IPL 2020 was not for the faint-hearted. For the first time in the history of the Indian Premier League, one day saw three Super Overs being played to determine the result of the match. The first match between Kolkata Knight Riders and Sunrisers Hyderabad saw the match being taken into the Super Over thanks to a magnificent display of bowling by Lockie Ferguson. In the second match at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Mumbai Indians and Kings XI Punjab’s match also went into the Super Over. The drama did not end there. Kings XI Punjab scored only five runs in the Super Over bowled by Jasprit Bumrah but Mohammed Shami responded brilliantly and restricted Mumbai Indians to just five runs. A second Super Over was played to determine the result and Kings XI Punjab, boosted by an epic six from Chris Gayle and Mayank Agarwal finally won an epic, pulsating match.

This was the first time in history that two Super Overs were needed to determine the outcome of the match. This is the fifth Super Over in IPL 2020 and already, this edition as had the most number of ties in the Indian Premier League. The first tied game was between Delhi Capitals and Kings XI Punjab in Dubai and it was Delhi Capitals who won the game when they bowled Kings XI Punjab out for two runs. This was the 13th tie in the history of the IPL.

The second tie was between Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore in Abu Dhabi as both teams managed to notch up scores of 200. Ishan Kishan of Mumbai Indians was dismissed for 99 but in the Super Over, Navdeep Saini restricted Mumbai Indians to seven runs and despite the best efforts by Jasprit Bumrah, Royal Challengers Bangalore were boosted by AB de Villiers and Virat Kohli

Unbelievable Sunday

The first match between Kolkata Knight Riders and Sunrisers Hyderabad saw a tense match. Kolkata Knight Riders managed to score 163/5 thanks to blazing cameos towards the end by Eoin Morgan and Dinesh Karthik. Sunrisers Hyderabad started well with Jonny Bairstow and Kane Williamson opening the batting but Lockie Ferguson ran through the middle order to finish with 3/15. David Warner struck three boundaries in the final over but he could only tie the game. In the Super Over, Lockie Ferguson dismissed both Warner and Abdul Samad cheaply as Sunrisers Hyderabad were bowled out for 2, the joint-lowest score in a Super Over with Kings XI Punjab. Kolkata Knight Riders managed to win with just two balls to spare.

In the second game, Mumbai Indians were boosted by a brilliant knock from Kieron Pollard who blasted 34 off 12 balls as the four-time champions reached 176/6. KL Rahul smashed 77 but Deepak Hooda and Chris Jordan, despite striking some clean blows, did not get Kings XI Punjab over the line. In the Super Over, Bumrah was at his best as Kings XI Punjab managed just five runs. However, Shami reciprocated brilliantly as he also conceded just five runs and Quinton de Kock was run-out of the last ball.

The rules according to the Super Over stated that the same batsmen and bowler could not bowl or bat in the first Super Over and two new batsmen and bowler from both teams had to bowl the second Super Over. There was some controversy when Kieron Pollard came out to bat in the second super over as the MCC rules stated that, “Any batsman dismissed in a Super-Over can't take part in the next.”

In the second Super Over, Kieron Pollard and Hardik Pandya came onto bat and Chris Jordan was tasked in bowling the second Super Over. There was some more confusion as to why Rohit Sharma was not allowed to bat as he was not dismissed in the Super Over. Pollard and Pandya managed 12 runs in the second super bowled by Chris Jordan but Gayle  hit a six off Trent Boult and Mayank Agarwal finished the match in style with two fours

Mumbai Indians and Kings XI Punjab are the only teams to have been involved in two Super Overs in this edition of the tournament, with Mumbai Indians losing both tied games. In more ways than one, October 18 should now be remembered as Super Over day in IPL.
