The IPL 2020 will finally be played after a delay of six months with Mumbai Indians taking on the Chennai Super Kings at the Sheikh Abu Zayed stadium in Abu Dhabi on September 19. Rohit Sharma’s Mumbai Indians, the four-time IPL champions will square off against MS Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings who have won the title three times. However, the IPL will be played in the ‘new normal’ amidst a strict bio-bubble.

These has resulted in several changes. According to the information from the BCCI, there will be no opening ceremony in IPL 2020 and due to the social distancing norms, there will be no cheerleaders as well in the UAE. The IPL 2019 opening ceremony was cancelled even in 2019 due to the terror attack on the CRPF convoy in Pulwama which killed over 40 soliders. However, there will be no stadium access to the media.

In a statement issued by the BCCI, it said, “Owing to the health and safety concerns, media personnel will not have access to the stadium to cover the games or team practice sessions. Additionally, this year, owing to the circumstances, there will be no new media registrations barring the UAE media. The BCCI recognises the high interest in the league and will facilitate virtual post-match press conferences after each match to the media. These press releases will contain details on procedures to join the virtual post-match press conferences and methods to send in questions for the team representatives during match-days.”

New normal

The teams have adapted to the bio-bubble environment ever since they arrived in the UAE. Six teams are put up in Dubai and they include Rajasthan Royals, Kings XI Punjab, Delhi Capitals, Chennai Super Kings, Royal Challengers Bangalore and Sunrisers Hyderabad. Mumbai Indians and Kolkata Knight Riders are in Abu Dhabi.

There will be no interaction with any outside elements during the team’s stay in the UAE. All the players from Australia and England have also arrived, with the players arriving in Dubai being in quarantine for just 36 hours while those going to Abu Dhabi will have to stay in quarantine for at least six more days.
