KL Rahul will be the leader of the Kings XI Punjab franchise for the first time-ever. In IPL 2020, Kings XI Punjab were the first teams along with Rajasthan Royals to travel early to the UAE. There is a lot of expectations from the Kings XI Punjab, who ended up as runners-up in 2014. The team has a great mix of aggressive batsman and solid bowling. They also have great back-up staff in Anil Kumble, the coach of the franchise and India’s greatest-ever spin bowler.

Speaking about captaincy, Mayank Agarwal, KL Rahul’s team-mate in Kings XI Punjab as well as in the Karnataka State team and India added that Rahul will get plenty of support from Chris Gayle and Anil Kumble. Both players have had international experience in captaincy and they will give it their all to ensure Kings XI Punjab go the entire distance in IPL 2020.

“Since Rahul is leading for the first time, he will get a lot of help, be it Kumble, Chris. He has a big support system. We are really looking forward to it,” Agarwal said.

The Karnataka connect

With the presence of Mayank Agarwal, KL Rahul, Karun Nair and Anil Kumble in the ranks, it is a surprise why Kings XI Punjab are not titled Kings XI Karnataka. Agarwal believes that it will be a pleasure to just get back out and play, especially since the Indian players have not had any form of cricket since April when the sport was shut down due to the coronavirus pandemic.

“It’s exciting for all of us he (Rahul) is going to lead. I’m looking forward to playing under him, it’s fantastic. Merely the chance to play during this time after a long break is very refreshing. I didn’t keep expectations high in the initial net sessions because I did not want to burden myself. It’s quite hot here. But yeah, you can say a little similar to Indian conditions. Just creating a batting rhythm and flow is my sole focus now. Nobody has played that much cricket this season. Some had a bit of cricket, some absolutely nothing. It’s going to be a fresh start for everybody. It’s a kind of level-playing field,” Agarwal said.
