The Delhi franchise had made their first appearance in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL). They had squared off against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in Qualifier 2 and defeated them by 17 runs to have a second shot against Mumbai. Delhi had lost Qualifier 1 against Mumbai Indians by 57 runs.

As for MI, it is the sixth time they are making it to the final and had won it four times - 2013, 2015, 2017 & 2019.
