The Uttarakhand government has decided to set up a Char Dham shrine board to run the affairs of the four Himalayan shrines including 51 famous temples located in the state. “Once formed, Chief Minister of the state would head the board as its chairperson. Three MPs, six MLAs, several secretaries and priests of the char dhams will also be included as members in the board,” Uttarakhand Urban Development Minister Madan Kaushik said. The proposed law to oversee temples would provide for a Hindu cabinet minister to be the chairperson of the board in case a Muslim becomes the chief minister. However, Kedarnath MLA Manoj Rawat said that the government is doing this because they are eyeing the temples donation.
