Over two months since 24-year-old Tabrez Ansari was beaten up by mobs in Jharkhand’s Seraikela Kharsawan district for alleged robbery, the state police has dropped murder charges under IPC Section 302 in the charge sheet filed against the 11 accused in the case. In July, 11 people were arrested for brutally assaulting Tabrez Ansari, forcing him to chant 'Jai Shri Ram' in a video that was circulated online. He was thrashed on the allegations of bike theft and was made to chant 'Jai Shri Ram' and 'Jai Hanuman'. While speaking to ANI, SP of Seraikela Kharsawan Karthik S said, “Chargesheet has been filed against 11 accused, murder case could not be made based on the findings of the postmortem report. We have charge-sheeted it as culpable homicide.” Meanwhile, wife of Tabrez Ansari, S Parveen said, “My husband was lynched, the earlier case was registered under section 302 (murder) but it was later changed to section 304 (culpable homicide) under administration’s influence. There is an attempt to save the culprits and CBI should investigate the case.” Earlier, the police had set up a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to look into the death of Ansari, who was declared dead by doctors at Tata Main Hospital in Jamshedpur.
