Diabetic overweight people at risk of developing nonalcoholic fatty liver

As per the Union Health Ministry, people who are overweight, obese and have diabetes are at a higher risk of developing non-alcoholic fatty liver disease as the prevalence of NAFLD is around 9 percent to 32 percent in the Indian population. Researchers have found NAFLD in 30 to 90 per cent of obese people and 40 to 80 per cent of those with type-2 diabetes. Studies also suggest that NAFLD increases the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases such as heart attack and stroke. Union Health Minister Dr. Harsh Vardhan said the Health Minister noted that India is becoming the first country in the world to identify the need for action for NAFLD.
