Youth held for sexually assaulting woman after promising marriage

A 25-year-old youth was arrested by the Nirmal Nagar police for allegedly sexually assaulting a woman after befriending her via a social networking site.

The accused, Vicky Kharat, came in contact with the 27-year-old woman around five months ago via Facebook. The duo then later met each other and maintained a physical relationship.

In her statement, the complainant told the police that she was sexually assaulted by the youth after he promised to marry her. According to the woman, Kharat also took a gold ring from her and later refused to marry her.

She has also complained of assault and abuse meted out by the accused. The girl approached the police, after which Kharat was arrested under sections 376 (rape), 420 (cheating), 406 (criminal breach of trust), 504 (intentional insult) and 323 (causing hurt) of the Indian Penal Code.

Kharat has been remanded under police custody till November 12.
