The government's move comes after the Nationalist Congress Party president Sharad Pawar had held the union agriculture ministry and the state department of agriculture wholly responsible for the deaths
The Maharashtra government on Thursday appealed to the Centre to initiate inquiry by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into the farmer deaths caused due to pesticide poisoning in Yavatmal district. The government, which had come under flak from opposition, has sent out a communication in this regard to the Centre.
Following the deaths of 19 farmers owing to an alleged exposure to a toxic pesticide, a detailed study was done by Central Institute of Cotton Research (CISR) and the report was submitted to the state government. CISR in its report had said that Herbicide tolerant genes were found in the BT cotton seeds of five branded companies and it was not permissible under the provisions of Environment Protection Act, 1986. An FIR has been registered against those five companies.
A government officer said, "The CISR study also revealed that such types of seeds are being produced in many other states also. In view of the seriousness of the issue, the government has sought CBI probe.''
The government's move comes after the Nationalist Congress Party president Sharad Pawar had held the union agriculture ministry and the state department of agriculture wholly responsible for the deaths.
State chief minister Devendra Fadnavis on October 22 visited the victims of pesticide poisoning at Yavatmal civil hospital and assured the stern action against those responsible for the farmer deaths.
