A junior girl wrestler from Haryana has levelled serious charges of sexual harassment against her coach. The incident took place a fortnight ago during a national camp in Lucknow for the under-19 team for the Asian Junior Wrestling Championship to be held in Kazakhstan from May 31 to June 3.

The girl (name withheld to protect identity) said her coach, also from Haryana, forcibly entered her room at midnight on May 15.

Hearing her screams, the other girls reached her room and locked it from outside. The coach who was caught red-handed threatened the girl against filing a complaint and even used abusive language in front of the other girls.

The wrestler, however, filed a complaint with sports minister Ajay Maken the next day. She said the coach had been passing lewd and objectionable comments against her for quite some time. The complaint letter has been signed by four girls. The sports ministry has asked the Sports Authority of India (SAI) to file a report into the incident. The SAI has constituted a three-member committee headed by its Lucknow centre regional director Rachna Govil.

Rachna confirmed the incident, but refused to divulge the names of victim and the coach. "I will send my report to the SAI head office in Delhi in two to three days. This is a very serious matter. Giving out their names will not be right," Rachna said.

SAI has barred the coach from accompanying the girls till the report is submitted. The girls have left for Kazakhstan. According to a Wrestling Federation of India letter, senior coach Vikram Kumar was supposed be in-charge of the camp. But he told DNA that he did not go and that Ajit Mann Singh was appointed in-charge in his place.

It was the first time that a junior girls' wrestling camp was hosted by the SAI Lucknow centre and there were 32 girls camped there till May 25.
