Bharatiya Janata Party president Amit Shah on Sunday said that the Narendra Modi-led government at the Centre will not allow Assam to become another Kashmir. Addressing a rally in the state, he said the government has brought about the National Register of Citizens (NRC) for the same. Saying that the NRC had been brought in to identify infiltrators, he said, the BJP will rid Assam of all such aliens by deporting them.

Shah was speaking as part of countrywide protest that the BJP has held to condemn the pulwama attacks. He also paid respects to the jawan from Assam who was killed. "I pay my tributes to Assam's son Maneswar Basumatary, along with the other CRPF personnel. This cowardice act by Pakistan and Pakistan-supported terrorist will not go unanswered. Prime Minister Modi has the strongest willpower and determination to fight against terrorism," said Shah.

He also added that the Centre will bring back the contentious Citizenship Amendment Bill, which has led to widespread protests in the Northeast region. Referring to the protests, he said some people deliberately created confusion on the matter.

"This is not only for Assam but for refugees in all the states. The way demographic changes are happening in Assam, if we do not bring this bill the public of this state will be in danger. Some people are doing politics over it and I am sure, people of the state will not fall for it," he said, making a reference to the increase of Muslim population in the state. The Bill aims to provide citizenship to those from non-Muslim communities who crossed the border till 2014, bring up the cutoff date four decades from the one agreed as per the Assam Accord: 1972.

"We will not allow Assam to become a second Kashmir. That is why we have brought NRC. We will deport each and every infiltrators with the help of NRC. We are committed to that," he said. The BJP leader also claimed that only a few people protested against the bill and that too not on the issue, but only to take benefits out of the situation.
