External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on Tuesday announced that she will not contest 2019 Lok Sabha elections due to health reasons.

Swaraj said that she had informed the party about her decision.

"It is the party which decides, but I have made up my mind not to contest next elections," said Swaraj in Indore. 

She is currently the Lok Sabha MP from Vidisha in MP. In December 2016, Swaraj successfully underwent a kidney transplant at AIIMS in the national capital.

In the past, Swaraj has held the position as Delhi's Chief Minister from October 13 to December 3, 1998.

She has also been Informational and Broadcasting Minister in the Centre, spokesperson of the BJP and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha.
