Police said on Thursday that they had arrested Jagadish, 30, husband of Asha Singh, 24. The couple, married two-and-a-half years ago, had a 15-month-old daughter.

Electrical contractor Jagadish, who returned home late around 11.50 pm, found Asha hanging from a ceiling fan, police said, adding that she had taken the extreme step after her daughter and mother-in-law had gone to sleep. A death note found in the house stated that she decided to end her life due to the harassment over dowry by Jagadish, his father Gangappa and mother Varalakshmi.

Jagadish was arrested based on a complaint by Krishna Singh, Asha’s uncle. Gangappa and Varalakshmi were being interrogated. The death note also revealed that she had planned to kill her daughter before committing suicide, but changed her mind.
