Reshma Riyasat Shaikh (26) approached the police yesterday with a complaint that an unidentified rickshaw driver snatched her baby away on a road and fled.

Police registered a case of kidnapping. But further probe and examination of CCTV footage of the area revealed that she had cooked up this story, said deputy commissioner of police Deepak Sakore.

When the police questioned her, Shaikh confessed that she had abandoned the baby in a river.

"She said she already has a daughter and a son, while her third daughter died after the birth. She was hoping for a boy this time," the DCP said.

Shaikh's sister-in-law had delivered a baby boy five days before her own delivery, so Shaikh was all the more disappointed and felt jealous, she told police.

"As the baby girl was not well, she took her to a hospital in Bopodi yesterday. While returning she abandoned the baby in the river and cooked up the kidnapping story," said Sakore.

The infant hasn't been found yet. Presuming that she would have drowned, police have registered a case of murder (section 302) and destruction of evidence (section 201) under the IPC against the mother. Shaikh has been detained.
