Modifying its earlier order, the Supreme Court today said it is not mandatory to play the national anthem in cinema halls before the screening of movies.

A bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra said a 12-member inter-ministerial committee, set up by the Centre, would take a final call on the playing of the national anthem in the cinemas.

In its order dated November 30, 2016, the apex court had made playing of the anthem mandatory in cinema halls before the screening of a film.
