Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is not happy with Delhi Metro Rail Corporation's (DMRC) proposed metro route connecting east and west Ahmedabad under the Rs11,000 crore Metrolink Express project for Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad.
The reason: The proposed elevated corridor from near Nehru bridge on east bank to near Gujarati Sahitya Parishad on west bank on Ashram road might hinder AMC's plan to mint money by auctioning land for commercial development under the Sabarmati Riverfront Development Project.
Recently, AMC authorities requested Gujarat Urban Development Company (GUDC), the coordinating agency, to change the proposed metro route connecting the eastern and western parts of the city in the stretch from Kalupur railway station to Thaltej.
In the letter, AMC officials have also proposed a route for the metro linking east and west bank that would affect the project in a minimal way.
If the proposed plan of DMRC is implemented, it would require leaving around 50 metre space from the metro's elevated corridor for any kind of construction. This would mean, AMC will have less land to be auctioned on the prime area of Ashram road. This would also mean that AMC's plan to earn Rs1,300 crore project cost might get affected apart from their plan to install cable car in the area.
GUDC officials said they have received the letter from AMC but are yet to discuss the suggestions elaborately.
"The officials have suggested that an elevated corridor be constructed along Nehru bridge to take the metro from the east bank of the river near the bridge where the underground tunnel for metro ends. They suggest that the elevated corridor pass from the Gandhigram railway station to Mithakali and then continue on the route proposed by the DMRC - from Navrangpura police station, Commerce six roads, Vijay crossroads, Helmet crossroads, Drive-in road to Thaltej," said a senior official in GUDC.
GUDC plans to send the suggestion to DMRC. "When DMRC prepared the route map, it studied technical as well as use details. It will again check the feasibility of taking the metro from Gandhigram railway station. A decision will be taken after the study," he added.
