The BJP used the power of its women MPs in the Lok Sabha on Thursday to put up a robust defence of Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2018, (Triple Talaq Bill).

During the debate, Meenakshi Lekhi, who is an MP from Delhi, questioned the rationale of opposition when even a majority of stanch Islamic countries do not practice triple talaq and have abolished it by law.

"Even Islamic nations don't have triple talaq in their laws, it is surprising that a secular country like India continues to adhere to it," said Lekhi.

"Women are given instant triple talaq over the phone, via SMS or messaging services. Where have you seen this happen? This bill ensures an effective way of curbing the act," she added.

A book by Tahir Mahmood and Saif Mahmood - Muslim Law in India and Abroad - has categorised Islamic countries that have done away with 'talaq-e-biddat' which include Arab States, Southeast Asian States and even countries from the subcontinent. The book was also cited by the Supreme Court in its order while striking down the practice of talaq-e-biddat or instant triple talaq.

The Arab States that have banned instant triple talaq include Algeria, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia, United Arab Emirates, and Yemen. Among the Southeast Asian countries that have abolished the practice include Indonesia, Malaysia, and Philippines. Even India's neighbours like Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka also have enacted robust laws against the inhuman practice.

Egypt and Bangladesh were among the first Islamic countries to abolish triple talaq in 1985 while Algeria and UAE instituted laws against it in 2004 and 2005 respectively.
