With both Narendra Modi and Jaswant Singh now in the same party, people are speculating on what their equation will now be like.
It will be interesting to see what Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi's relationship with fellow BJP stalwart Jaswant Singh will be like, now that Singh has been re-inducted into the BJP.
The Modi-ruled state government had placed a ban on Singh's last book, over his comments on Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, independent India's first home minister and a very important leader in the state. The senior BJP leader was already facing hostility from the party, for allegedly praising Jinnah and criticising Patel.
Modi holds an important berth at the national leadership level in the party, and was touted as their prime ministerial candidate during the previous parliamentary elections. He continues to have support from the party, even during awkward situations like the recent issue with Bihar CM Nitish Kumar. On the other hand, Singh also got a warm welcome from Nitin Gadkari, national party president, and LK Advani, the party's senior most leader. The latter have applauded Singh's re-entry in the party saying that he is an important ally, and have made him a member of the national executive council.
With both Modi and Singh now in the same party, a debated has commenced on their probable relationship. People are speculating on what their equation will now be like, after the recent friction.
Political observers say that there are no permanent friends or enemies in politics, and Modi will surely remain silent over the issue. "Modi did not enforce the ban (on Singh's book) out of a personal grudge. He was only concerned about how Sardar Patel, the pride of the state, was being depicted", said Ghanshyam Shah, an eminent political analyst. "On the other hand, even if the two have a problem with each other, senior party leaders are sure to intervene. But where Modi is concerned, it looks like he will keep mum", said Shah.
On the other hand, senior lawyer and political critic Girish Patel feels that Modi was completely wrong in putting a ban on the book. "Even the Gujarat high court, while lifting the ban, said that the Gujarat government had not applied its mind", he says. Patel says Modi can change his views at any point of time, but at the end of the day, politics is unpredictable.
Siddharth Patel, president of the Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) put up his comment as his status update on social networking website Facebook. "Has Modi lost voice within his own party? Modi had criticised strongly and advocated his (Singh's) ouster from the party. BJP has recently re-inducted him in the party… Now what does the Gujarat chief minister have to say about this ?", he posted.
