West Bengal government celebrated November 14 as 'Rosogolla Dibas' (Rosogolla Day) to commemorate the first anniversary of the sweet getting geographical indication or GI tag as 'Banglar Rosogolla'. Different types of the famous sweet were to be displayed at the Mishti Hub in Eco Park of New Town in the eastern fringes of the city on Wednesday.

At the event, hosted by the Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation (HIDCO), experts were to partake in a discussion on the history of the popular sweet of West Bengal. The Misti Hub has already been a crowd puller, with visitors coming not only from different parts of the state, but also the country and from overseas as well.

Incidentally, November 14 is also observed as World Diabetes Day. On this day in 2017, West Bengal won a two-and-a-half-year battle with Odisha over the origin of Rosogolla after the Geographical Indications (GI) Registry announced that the sweet had originated in Bengal and not in Odisha.

Sanjay Bhattacharya, deputy controller of patents and designs in Kolkata, had said that it had been settled under the GI Act that authenticated a product relating to either a geographical location or community or society.

Bengal's fight with Odisha had gained momentum in 2015 after Odisha's science and technology minister Pradip Kumar Panigrahi said that committees set up to trace the origin of the sweet gave conclusive evidence that rosogolla existed in the state for about 600 years.

Bengal government, on the other hand, had claimed that rosogolla was invented by Nabin Chandra Das, a famous sweetmeat maker of Bengal, in 1868.

After Bengal emerged victorious, Dhiman Das, director of KC Das Private Ltd and a great-great-grandson of Nabin Chandra expressed his gratitude to the state government for its initiative to get the GI registration in the state's favour. "The government took all related documents and information from us to authenticate the claim that Nabin Chandra Das was indeed the inventor of rosogolla," he said.
