Ahead of the much-hyped West Bengal Assembly Election 2021, a delegation of Trinamool Congress MPs met with the Election Commission of India on Friday. During the meeting, TMC MPs told the EC that fair elections in West Bengal are becoming a distant reality.

The TMC leaders - including Saugata Roy, Yashwant Sinha, Md Nadimul Haque, Pratima Mondal and Mahua Moitra registered their protest against the poll panel's decision to not allow state police within 100 metres of the polling stations, calling the EC's approach as partisan and biased.

The memorandum said this needs to be substantiated at the appropriate level.

While speaking to media, TMC MP Mahua Moitra said, "We met Election Commission today and raised three points - the rule under which they are proposing to put only Central forces within 100 metres of the polling booth, only 5% of VVPAT checking as supposed to 100% and the incident involving the attack on Chief Minister on March 10."

Election Commission has decided that all the polling stations in Bengal would be manned by Central paramilitary forces and the state and city police would be deployed 200 metres away from the polling booths.

Earlier, on March 10, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had alleged that she was pushed by a few unidentified people during her election campaigning in Nandigram.

Trinamool Congress alleged that EC's decision is only for West Bengal and not the other four poll-bound states in the country.

It further stated that the deployment of Central forces should be to help the state government deal with law and order and not to demean the state police force.

West Bengal will go to the polls on March 27. The eight-phase polling will continue till April 29. The counting of votes will take place on May 2.
