West Bengal Assembly Election 2021: 62.40% voter turnout recorded till 3:15 pm, PM Modi attacks Mamata at Asansol rally

The fifth phase of polling in the West Bengal Assembly Election 2021 for 45 assembly seats in six districts is underway. These districts include North 24 Parganas, Purba Bardhaman, Nadia, Jalpaiguri, Darjeeling, and Kalimpong. 

A total of 319 candidates, including 39 women are in the race to the 294 seat Vidhan Sabha. Several key ministers including Trinamool Congress' Gautam Deb, Bratya Basu, BJP's Jagannath Sarkar, and Samik Bhattacharya's fate will be sealed after the voting ends today.

According to the Election Commission's latest data on voting percentage for West Bengal's fifth phase of polling, the state has recorded a voter turnout of 62.40% till 3:15 pm.

Meanwhile, a firing incident was reported from Kurulgachi in Deganga of North 24 Parganas by the Central forces. Election Commission has asked for a report in this regard.

During the fifth phase of the West Bengal Assembly polls, Union Home Minister Amit Shah held an election rally in Amdanga, North 24 Parganas district today. 

On the other hand, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday launched a sharp attack at the Mamata Banerjee-led government in West Bengal saying that the state needed a 'double engine government, not the one that halts development'.

He went on to say that the TMC has broken after four phases of polls. "Didi and Bhatija will be vanquished by end of West Bengal elections," said Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the Asansol rally.

Polling in West Bengal is being conducted in eight phases, of which, four phases with 135 seats have already been completed. Counting of votes and results to the 294 Vidhan Sabha seats in West Bengal will be declared on May 2, 2021.
