Former Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) president Rajnath Singh on Saturday said that his party is ready for mid-term general polls if the ruling Congress-led United Progressive Alliance wishes so. Singh said that the UPA is threatening the opposition with mid-term polls to counter its demand of a joint parliamentary probe into various scams, but his party would rather face the electorate than cow down on the issue.

Alleging that the Congress was not in favour of the joint parliamentary committee (JPC) probe as it is inextricably involved in the scams, Singh said his party’s stand is clear that there would be no more discussions save an inquiry into the scams. “The quantum of the scams in 2-G spectrum, Commonwealth Games and Adarsh society are so huge that we want the inquiry by no less than a platform like the JPC,” he said.

When asked about the land scams by the Yeddyurappa government in Karanataka, Singh said that his party does not mind if it is brought into the purview of the JPC probe. “There is no proof revealed so far in the Yeddurappa land grab cases, like the ones available in the three scams by those in the Congress governments. However, we are ready to get the Karnataka scam probed by a JPC,” he said. He was addressing a press conference at the BJP office at Dadar.

The BJP leader said that only the JPC can conduct a fair investigation as it has the right to interrogate any person it wants to. “Whereas the public accounts committee, which is agreed upon by the Congress, has limited rights to inquire into the accounts-related irregularities. If the Congress feels that it is innocent, it should not shy away from the JPC,” he added.

Singh also slammed the Maharashtra government and alleged that the government is buying time in the Adarsh scam case by not taking action against the officials involved. “People are outraged by this racketeering of bureaucrats and politicians in the name of soldiers. The Maharashtra government is taking advantage of the confusion in the political corridors,” he said.
