While both the BJP and Congress engaged in serious discussions over post-poll alliances in Meghalaya which is set for a hung mandate, two-time Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma said that the Congress, although wary, was hopeful of springing back to power."We are keeping a close watch on the other side and trying to do our best. We know how the BJP functions, and so we are going to keep our strategies close to our chest," Sangma said. "We are hopeful that the Congress will come back to power in Meghalaya."Sangma, who stood for elections from his usual constituency of Ampati and from nearby Songsak in the Garo Hills, won both the seats. Within the Congress, a lot of dissent has emerged with Sangma leading to an exodus of sorts.

In the run-up to the elections, five of the party MLAs quit and joined the BJP. In addition, leaders from Khasi and Jaintia Hills have been demanding that a non-Garo face be made the CM. This means that despite a win, Sangma might not return to the helm.
