With the rising mercury, street side thirst quenchers are tempting more people. However, due to consumption of poor quality products to beat the oppressive heat more and more people are falling prey to severe stomach infections in the city. Devouring inferior quality golas, cold drinks and fruit juices stirred with unhealthy ice-cubes, has led to the cases of stomach infections, which mainly include jaundice and typhoid, which have risen by 20% in the city in March alone.

Dr Harsh Toshniwal, an infectious disease specialist, says, "The cases of stomach infections, mainly jaundice and typhoid, have started going up in the city due to consumption of inferior quality ice products. An increase of about 20% is apparent in private clinics for these diseases."

Viral stomach infections have also increased among paediatric patients. Dr. Dewang Parikh, president of the Academy of Paediatrics in Ahmedabad, says, "The cases of jaundice and typhoid have marginally upped in school-going kids, while there is a corresponding increase in cases of viral gastroenteritis infections among younger kids as well."

Majority of patients affected by such stomach infections are treated by private doctors and clinics and do not require hospitalisation. However, the data revealed by Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), which maintains the figures of hospitalised patients of only five hospitals in the city, also points to a rise in stomach infection cases.
The AMC data show that about 20 indoor cases of typhoid and jaundice have been registered daily since the beginning of this month. From January to March, 983 cases of hospitalisation for jaundice (682) and typhoid (301) have been recorded. Of these, 382 cases of severe stomach infections that required hospitalisation were registered in March alone. There were 261 cases of jaundice and 121 of typhoid.
