Home Minister Gulabchand Kataria expressed respect for the SC order, but said the state is yet to receive a copy
The Supreme Court (SC) order on Padmaavat has caused a furore in Rajasthan. Shri Rajput Karni Sena (SRKS) has asked the public to enforce a janta ban and not see the film. SRKS also says that cinema hall owners have assured them in writing that the film will not be released without their consent.
Home Minister Gulabchand Kataria expressed respect for the SC order, but said the state is yet to receive a copy. "We are yet to get a copy of the order; we will have it examined by our Law department. We will plan the future course of action after that. Law and order will be maintained," he said.
In Ujjain, SRKS patron Lokendra Kalvi said, "SC can remove the ban but cinema halls are needed to screen the film.
"We have written assurance from cinema hall owners and their association that they will not exhibit the movie without SRKS's consent." Kalvi called for a janta bandh and appealed to the public to not see the film in cinema halls.
"We appeal to the public and all social organisations to support our call for a janta bandh. We urge them to not visit Chittorgarh fort, Padmini palace and the jauhar spot, and not click pictures there. That there was no ban on Jodha Akbar, but it did not reach cinema halls in Rajasthan. I request all to do the same for Padmaavat," Kalvi urged.
Mahipal Makrana, president of SRKS, also expressed dissatisfaction over the court order and said that, "Rajput women will commit jauhar on January 24 at Chittorgarh. A total of 1,826 women have registered for this. Even men will perform saka. The government will be responsible."
President of Rashtreey Karni Sena Sukhdev Gogamedi said his organisation would challenge the order in a double bench of the Supreme Court. "Four judges have already cast doubts over the functioning of the Supreme Court. How can a case be heard in a day, when otherwise, the common man waits for justice? This is damaging to democracy. We will meet and seek help from the President."
Kalvi also said that members of SRKS would lay siege on Chittorgarh in Rajasthan on January 27. "We had given a call for Bharat bandh but we will not go ahead with it as we do not wish to cause security hazard on Republic Day," he said.
While appealing in the apex court, the Counsel for Rajasthan government had cited law and order problems if the film is released. However, the court refused to consider this. It observed that if Bandit Queen can be released and book like 'I did not kill Gandhi' be published, why not this film?
Meanwhile, a cinema hall in Bihar's Muzaffarpur district was allegedly vandalised by members of the Rajput Karni Sena. Around 25-30 members, armed with lathis and swords, went on a rampage at Jyoti theatre. The footage from CCTV cameras shows protesters tearing down posters of the film and destroying the ticket counter, and other hall property. "The film will not reach cinema halls," an agitated vandal said. "This is just a demo of the protests."
While no FIR had been lodged till late evening, Muzaffarpur Police said they will remain watchful to avoid any related incidents.
The Gujarat government has decided to study the Supreme Court order. Home Minister Pradipsinh Jadeja said, "We have made all attempts to ban screening of Padmavati/Padmaavat. We firmly believe that the film presents distorted history and that can hurt sentiments of people. We have decided that we will study the court's order and then will clear our stand after we consult the advocates and legal experts."
Violent protests broke out in Gujarat with members of the Rajput community blocking the highway connecting Saurashtra to Ahmedabad. Tyres and vehicles were set ablaze on highways to Bavla and Bagodara towns.
"I have directed all senior police officials to maintain law and order in Gujarat," said Jadeja. "I also appeal to all citizens of Gujarat to maintain calm."
