Video of woman being abused in public surfaces in Rajasthan

A video from Barmer where a man is seen dragging and kicking a woman has gone viral. It has invited the ire of the Rajasthan State Commission for Women (RSCW), too. The RSCW chief, Suman Sharma, on Monday, sought a report from Barmer police about the matter.

The 20-second video shows an elderly man dragging a woman, who appears to be in a pitiable condition. He is seen dragging her by the collar through the streets, and when she manages to break free, he is seen kicking her.

Talking about the video, Sharma said: "I have asked Barmer police to identify the person and take appropriate action. The woman appears to be a mentally unstable destitute."

Acting swiftly, Barmer police began a probe and identified the man in the video as a local philanthropist. A case was registered against him on Monday evening.

Investigation has revealed that the video was reportedly made at the parking lot of the Barmer Government Hospital. The man seen is Lachpar Rai Sindhi, a local philanthropist, and chairman of Manav Seva Dharm Trust, which provides food to poor patients who come to the government hospital for treatment. This is done through grants and donations.

"We have lodged an FIR against Sindhi. He has no previous record of any offence. We will question him and try to find out what the matter is. The place where the video was shot has been identified, too," said investigating officer Amar Singh Ratnu.

A source associated with the Manav Seva Dharm Trust said, "The victim was trying to mess with the food that was being distributed. She refused to listen even when warned. This angered Rai and he dragged her away. She is mentally unfit and often eats food provided by the trust."
