Veteran historian Satish Chandra, author of NCERT textbooks from 1970s to early 2000s and former JNU professor, passed away on Friday. He was 95.

Chandra was Professor of History at JNU. Along with S. Gopal, Bipan Chandra, and Romila Thapar, he founded the Centre for Historical Studies at the School of Social Sciences where he served as its chairperson for a few years.

He has been described as of India's leading scholars of the Moghul period and as one of India's most influential historians. His book, Mediaeval India, has been widely used as a textbook in schools and colleges around the country.

Through the 1970s, he was the vice chairman and chairman of the University Grants Commission of India.
