Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit stirred up a storm when he made allegations of institutionalised corruption in the appointment of vice-chancellors in universities.

While addressing a conference on 'Enhancing Quality Education' at T Nagar in Chennai, Purohit, who is the chancellor of all state-run universities, said, "After assuming charge as Governor of Tamil Nadu, I came to know that the post of vice-chancellor in state universities can be bought by shelling out several crores. I did not believe it at first. But after I discovered it myself, I was concerned and wanted to change the system." Purohit said he appointed nine vice-chancellors purely on merit.

In response to Purohit's allegation, State higher education minister KP Anbazhagan said the state does not play a role in appointing vice-chancellors. "They are appointed by the governor," he clarified.

Leader of Paattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) party Anbumani Ramadoss wondered what action Purohit has taken to punish culprits. He said it was not enough to detect the presence of corruption; it was also the Governor's duty to take action against those involved.

Purohit's remarks come at a time when V-Cs, registrars and senior officials of various universities are embroiled in corruption cases. Former V-C of Anna University, R Radhakrishnan, was sentenced to five years in jail by a special court in 2016 for accepting a bribe from a contractor, while A Ganapathi, VC of Coimbatore based Bharathiar University was arrested earlier this year for taking a bribe to regularise the job of an assistant professor.
