The order was issued on July 10, 2017 by Dr Adarsh Singh, the Special Secretary, Chief Minister’s Secretariat. Following the order, the Director General of Police (DGP) office had issued a circular to all officers and district police chiefs seeking their suggestions on the Chief Minister’s direction of to wear khadi once a week.

Senior officer of the DGP office claimed that due to ambiguity in the order from the CM’s office, majority of the replies the DGP office has received have sought to know about what type of Khadi dress they are supposed to wear. Will they don politicians’ favourite dress kurta-pyjama or dhoti-kurta or designer khadi wears? Majority of replies revolved around these queries.

“There is no clarity on it yet. We have sought clarification from the CM’s Office on the issue raised by officers to enforce the order,” said an officer in the DGP office on condition of anonymity.

Though the officer praised the move as it will help police personnel to get a day’s break to wash their uniforms but he was sceptical about the move affecting the policing.

“People no longer fear khakhi these days. Seeing them in khadi may further erode their identity and authority,” chuckled the officer.
