Uttar Pradesh: Woman given triple talaq over dowry

The capital of Uttar Pradesh, Lucknow has received its first case of triple talaq. A woman has been divorced by her husband in the court premises itself on August 19 before the court's hearing on the dowry matter between the two.

The incident took place when the victim and the accused, Syed Rashid Ali were being called to the court for the hearing. "I had been married to my husband for 14 years but we had been fighting a lot over these years," said the victim. The accused had been demanding a car from his in-laws. Tired of continuous fighting, the victim registered a complaint against the accused in February.

The matter was set for a hearing in a court in Lucknow on Monday. "I had reached the court with my brother. When my brother had gone for some work, my husband came to talk to me, he pressurised me to withdraw the case. However, he did not stop there, flushed with anger, he uttered the word talaq thrice and divorced me," said the victim.

A complaint has been registered in the matter and probe is underway.
