Taking serious note of disrespect to Independence Day celebrations, the Yogi Adityanath government on Monday cancelled the accreditation and registration of a madrasa in Maharajganj district after it reportedly forced students to not sing the national anthem on August 15.

The Principal of the erring madrasa, Maulana Fazlur Rehman, has been arrested while action has been initiated against the management committee members and teachers who disobeyed the state government orders. Meanwhile, the Uttar Pradesh Madrasa Shiksha Parishad has cancelled the accreditation and registration of the madrasa with immediate effect.

The state government had ordered an inquiry after a video went viral on social media. In the video, teachers at Madarsa Arabia Ahle Sunnat Anwaare Taiyyab forced students to not sing national anthem after flag hoisting, despite protest by a Hindu teacher, posted there to implement madrasa modernisation activities as envisaged by the state government.
