Uttar Pradesh: Senior police officer commits suicide by shooting himself in Lucknow office

Rajesh Sahni, an Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP), posted at the Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS), allegedly committed suicide in the ATS office by shooting himself with his own service revolver.

The police have so far not recovered any suicide note from his room in the ATS Office, situated in Gomtinagar. A case has been registered and a body has been sent for the post-mortem. What led to the police officer taking the extreme step is not yet known.

Those present in the UP ATS Office at the time of the incident claimed that he was sitting in his room and suddenly there was a sound of firing. “We saw him in his chair in a pool of blood when we rushed to his room after hearing the sound of the firing,” said an ATS commando. He was rushed to the hospital where doctors declared him brought dead.

His family members were informed about the incident. “A probe has been ordered to ascertain the reasons behind the police officer taking the extreme step,” said the SSP Deepak Kumar.

Police is baffled why the ASP shot himself after coming to the office. Was he undergoing some work pressure or facing any humiliation from any corners or having troubled family life, these are the few questions, the police is trying to find answers.

“We are shocked over the incident as Sahni was one of our best officers,” said Aseem Arun, the IG UP ATS.

Hailing from Patna in Bihar, Rajesh Sahni, had joined UP ATS in July 2014. Since then he had nabbed many dreaded terrorists and cracked different modules of the terror outfits in Uttar Pradesh and other states. A 1992 batch Provincial Police Service (PPS) officer, Sahni was considered as the most daring police officer.
