Following reports of stray cows damaging crops, the Uttar Pradesh government has decided to tag all animals in the state.

The government has also instructed officials to house stray cows in unused or abandoned government buildings if there is any such need.

The 35-page government order issued on Monday, along with necessary guidelines, has been sent to all districts, Director, Animal Disease Control Dr SK Srivastava said.

Elaborating on the directives, Dr Srivastava said that the idea is to provide relief to farmers who had complained of crops being destroyed by stray cows.

Along with the tagging of cows, a register would be maintained at the district-level, which will keep a record of cows and their owners. Rest all other cows will be treated as strays and would be kept at Gaushalas and unused government buildings. The officials will be responsible for arranging fodder. However, such cow shelters would be made on temporary basis.

Explaining the process, Dr Srivastava said that a ring will be fitted on the ears of all cows. These rings will have specific numbers, the details of which would be maintained in the register.

A few districts have already begun the process of tagging cows, Dr Srivastava said.

The government order comes three weeks after Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath gave district magistrates a week to ensure stray cattle across the state are shifted to fenced shelters.
