A man was arrested in the US state of California on the charges of a hate crime. The convict threw hot coffee on a Sikh clerk and then punched him believing that he was a Muslim.

The arrested man has been identified as John Crain, who allegedly threw the coffee at the clerk and then punched him in the face before fleeing away. The incident reportedly took place around 2 am on Wednesday in Marysville.

According to Marysville police department press release, Crain can be seen in the CCTV footage attacking the Sikh clerk. The Sikh clerk can be seen confronting Crain at the front door before being attacked. The victim suffered injuries from the hot coffee and the contusion on his face, the local police said.

The police said officers were sent to the same store later that afternoon for another assault report. The police then spotted Crain walking away from the store area.

Later, on being arrested, Crain admitted that he had assaulted the clerk during the previous night’s incident. He told police he “hated Muslims” and attacked the Sikh clerk because he believed he’s Muslim. He was later booked into Yuba County Jail for theft, assault and hate crimes charges.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations and its allies from the Sikh community condemned the attack.

“We condemn this attack on an individual because of his faith. This hate crime represents yet another attack on our Sikh brothers and sisters fuelled by Islamophobia and those emboldened by this administration’s xenophobic policies and sentiments,” CAIR-SV’s Civil Rights Attorney Saad Sweilem said in a statement. “We welcome the hate crime charges and encourage law enforcement to continue to take these clear incidents of bias seriously.”

Lately, the number of recorded hate crimes has more than doubled in the past five years in the US. Hate crime offenses recorded by the police rose by 17% to 94,098 in the 12 months to March across the globe. This represents an increase of 123% since 2013 when 42,255 hate crimes were recorded.
