Leftist activist and poet Dr Varavara Rao was picked up by a team of Pune Police on Saturday from his Hyderabad residence.

Rao was arrested in August on charges of having Maoist links and for playing an active role in organising the Elgaar Parishad in Pune. Activists Sudha Bharadwaj, Gautam Navlakha, Vernon Gonsalves and Arun Ferreira were also arrested on the same day. However, following a Supreme Court order, they were kept under house arrest and were asked to approach an appropriate court to seek further legal remedies. Rao approached the Hyderabad High Court challenging the transit remand order issued by the chief metropolitan magistrate. However, the court refused to set aside the transit remand order and disposed off the case.

Following the court's order, a team of the Pune Police went to Rao's house and arrested him on Saturday evening.

Confirming the arrest, joint commissioner of Police Shivaji Bodkhe said, "The period of house arrest got over today, and when the HC disposed his plea, our team took him in custody. He will be brought to Pune and will be produced before a court on Sunday."
