Trinamool Congress (TMC), along with other opposition parties, raised the issue in both houses of parliament alleging that Banerjee’s flight was left circling over Kolkata airport for about half an hour and was not given priority landing despite the pilot reporting about low fuel.
A political row erupted in the parliament on Thursday amid allegations that an IndiGo plane with West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee on board was made to hover over Kolkata airport despite low fuel thereby putting her life and the lives of over 100 other passengers on board at risk. The government, however, attempted to assure both houses of the parliament that there was no conspiracy whatsoever. IndiGo also issued a statement in this regard but denied that its aircraft was running low on fuel. The airline claimed that the Kolkata air traffic control (ATC) “misunderstood” the message given by pilots of its flight 6E 342 and wrongly assumed the plane was running low on fuel.
Trinamool Congress (TMC), along with other opposition parties, raised the issue in both houses of parliament alleging that Banerjee’s flight was left circling over Kolkata airport for about half an hour and was not given priority landing despite the pilot reporting about low fuel.
The government vehemently denied any design and said Banerjee’s flight hovered over Kolkata airport for only 13 minutes. Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha were informed by Civil Aviation Minister Ashok Gajapathi Raju and MoS Jayant Sinha respectively.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has ordered an inquiry to find out how three flights at the same time could fly low on fuel when the norms mandate them to carry enough fuel to enable hovering for 30-40 minutes as well as to carry it to the nearest diversion airport.
