Rashtriya Lok Samta Party (RLSP) chief Upendra Kushwaha on Thursday joined the Congress-led UPA, which unveiled its rainbow coalition of opposition parties for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. The likely final UPA line-up for Bihar now features the RJD, Congress, HAM (S) and LJD.

Kushwaha had quit the Union Cabinet and the ruling NDA on December 10. He joined the other Mahaghatbandhan leaders at the Congress headquarters in New Delhi for a show of strength.

However, it remains to be seen how much muscle Kushwaha will bring to the UPA, considering all three of his legislators in Bihar have rebelled against him and announced that they would be staying put in the NDA.

Kushwaha's entry into the UPA was announced in the presence of senior Congress leader Ahmed Patel, Bihar Congress chief Shaktisinh Gohil, RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav, Hindustan Awam Morcha (Secular) leader Jitan Ram Manjhi and Loktantrik Janata Party leader Sharad Yadav.

Kushwaha had quit the NDA over the seat sharing deal that is being worked out by the NDA partners in Bihar. The RLSP was unhappy at being allotted only two seats. Another ally, Ram Vilas Paswan's LJP too is negotiating hard.

Addressing reporters at the Congress HQ, Kushwaha called on Paswan to quit the NDA. He accused the BJP of steamrolling smaller allies and appealed to Paswan to leave his long-term membership of the NDA behind if he felt his party wasn't being offered a good deal in the seat sharing.
