A man in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's parliamentary constituency Varanasi tried to immolate himself in protest against the release of Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Padmaavat in Uttar Pradesh.

The man has been identified as Dharmendra. While members of Ksahtriya Veerangana Foundation were holding a demonstration outside IP Mall showing Padmaavat, Dharmendra poured kerosene on him and was about to light himself up when the Chetganj Police overpowered him. He was arrested with two women activists of the foundation.

Elsewhere in Uttar Pradesh, the release of Padmavat amid tight security arrangements faced widespread protests from activists of Karni Sena, Kshatriya Mahasabha and other Hindu outfits. From burning effigies to throwing petrol bombs and Gandhigiri to appeal people not to view the controversial movie.

About 800 tickets were booked for PVR in Kanpur but fearing violence the Manager refused to screen the film. Those who went to watch the movie returned with their ticket booking amount.

In Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh's hometown Chandauli, the film was screened at the lone multiplex.
