An upper caste Hindu man was thrashed by cow vigilantes in Uttar Pradesh when he was passing through a village in Balrampur along with his ailing cow.

A resident of Lakshmanpur village in Balrampur district of Uttar Pradesh, 70-year-old Kailash Nath Shukla took his ailing cow for treatment to another village on August 30. Suddenly, he was surrounded by cow vigilantes when he was passing through Nandpur village.

Agitated gau rakshaks charged him with dumping his ailing cow in the village. Despite old man’s pleas that he was a Brahmin and was taking the cow to consult a veterinary doctor for treatment, the irate mob did not listen to him and thrashed him brutally with sticks and threw him in a gutter.

Villagers got further infuriated when someone from the crowd alleged that the old Brahmin was selling the ailing cow to a Muslim in next village. They took out Shukla from the gutter, shaved off his head, blackened his face and chained him. He was made to parade in the village with cow vigilantes whistling and threatening others to teach a similar lesson if anyone dared to insult cow.

Later, the old Brahmin reached a nearby police station but his FIR was not lodged. When the Superintendent of Police Balrampur Rajesh Kumar came to know about the incident, he ordered for the arrest of those who had beaten him up on suspicion of selling a cow.

Four persons have so far been arrested in this case and the old man is currently admitted to the district hospital. “A case has been lodged and more arrest will be made after identifying those involved in beating the old man. An inquiry has also been ordered against policemen who refused to lodge his case. Action will be initiated against them too,” assured the SP.
