The Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh is seeking legal opinion on withdrawing cases against its leaders who are accused in 2013 Muzaffarnagar riots in which at least 62 people were killed and hundreds of Muslim families were displaced.
Former union minister and BJP MP Sanjiv Balyan, Cabinet Minister Suresh Rana, BJP MLA Sangeet Som, BJP MP Kunwar Bhartendra Singh, BJP MLA Umesh Malik, and VHP leader Sadhvi Prachi are the main accused in two cases in connection with the riots.
The accused had given provocative speeches in two villages of Muzaffarnagar in the August 2013 which led to widespread communal clashes.
After withdrawing 20,000 cases against politicians in the state, Yogi sought legal opinion from the state's Law and Justice department about the possibility of withdrawing cases against the BJP leaders. The Yogi government feels fake cases were slapped against BJP leaders out of political vendetta by then Akhilesh Yadav government.
