Taking suo motu cognisance of the custodial death of the Unnao rape victim’s father in Unnao, Uttar Pradesh, the Allahabad High Court has appointed an ‘amicus curiae’ (friend of court) and directed the Yogi Adityanath government to file all details related to the case with action taken report (ATR).

Senior lawyer Gopal S. Chaturvedi submitted a letter, written by the Unnao rape victim, in the court of the Chief Justice Allahabad HC DB Bhosale, seeking a CBI inquiry and arrest of BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar, who allegedly raped the girl and was behind the killing of her father in police custody.  The Chief Justice appointed senior criminal lawyer Gopal S Chaturvedi as ‘amicus curiae’ to assist the court in disposing the case.

Taking suo motu cognisance of the letter, the court admitted it as a PIL. The court will hear the case on April 12.  

Justice Bhosale directed the state government to preserve the body of the rape victim’s father, if not cremated. But since last rites were performed on Tuesday itself so the court order may not apply. 

He further directed Advocate General Raghvendra Singh to appear before the court on Thursday with all details related to the case and what action the state government has so far taken in the rape and murder case.
